The origins of settlement in Plainfield date back to the 1680's when a number of residents from Perth Amboy settled "outplantations" along Cedar Brook, calling it Blondyn Plains. Plainfield was known for the many batteries operating along the Green Brook, and in 1869 after direct rail service was established with New York City, became one of the first bedroom communities. It was also one of the wealthier railroad suburbs, as can be seen today from the scale of the houses. In just the Van Wyck Brooks historic district, over 100 millionaires are supposed to have lived there. Plainfield is a bustling suburban city "hamlet" situated twenty six miles southwest of New York City. The area offers a unique combination of stately living, New Jersey history, arts and science in an environment that encourages exploration and innovation and fosters family living. Plainfield is supported by all public utilities and
employs a variety of industries ranging from fiinance, real
estate and manufacturing to sales, administration and other
corporations. |
