Nestled between two ridges of the rocky Watchung Mountains, the community of Watchung, approximately 6.2 square miles in size, is bordered by both Morris and Union Counties.
Watchung, meaning "high place", is a name believed to have been given to the area by the Lenni-Lenape Indians.
When Dutch settlers arrived in the early 1700's, they came to the Watchung region to take advantage of the rich soil. The region was well known as a thriving agricultural area. In the 1800's the area drew the wealthy from the city and mansions began springing up on the ridges. The wealthy mystique of the town continues today.
