Approximately 1,280 acres was purchased in 1681 from the Lenape Indians for Lady Elizabeth Carteret. The Indians received wampum, blankets, guns, kettles, axes, stockings, skirts, coats, pistols, lead powder, rum, beer, molasses and tobacco for their land. This land was later "subdivided" into many communities such as present day South Bound Brook.
In 1761, the Queens Bridge connecting Bound Brook and South Bound Brook was constructed. The oldest section of South Bound Brook is 17 Van Stuben Lane Circa 1690, where Baron Van Stuben entertained George and Martha Washington.
It is also reported that Generals Lee and Knox and President Lincoln were also visitors to this address.
