The area known as Somerville was purchased in 1683 from the Lenape Indians for 120 pounds sterling.

Prior to the railroad coming to Somerville in 1841, the town was a main stop for stagecoaches going between Newark and Philadelphia.

Somerville is the county seat for Somerset county with a beautiful white marble court house in the center of town. Approximately 2.4 square miles in size, Somerville is considered a small town with quiet neighborhoods and quaint houses.

Today, Somerville is best known for the "Tour of Somerville", a Memorial Day bicycle race which draws thousands of visitors from around the world to compete and watch.
