Sir George Carteret was granted the land of East Jersey by King Charles II of England through his brother James, Duke of York.
In 1688 Somerset County was set off from Middlesex County and was divided into three precincts. The Western Precinct an area later to become known as Montgomery Township, was so named for Gen. Richard Montgomery, a much decorated Revolutionary War hero.
Today, the Township of Montgomery is a thriving area of approximately 32.26 square miles. It is made up mostly of residential development. The convenience of Princeton, Trenton and Philadelphia makes this community an ideal location.
