The Green Brook (and Green Brook Township) took its name and had its beginnings up in the mountains several miles away. It was fed by many smaller brooks and ponds and was a stream of great power as it made its way down the mountainside. The Green Brook flowed in a southwesterly direction for a distance of fifteen miles, never getting too far away from the mountains. It flowed into the Bound Brook then into the Raritan River just as it does today.

The Raritan Indians were the residents of the early 1600's followed by the transferees from Massachusetts and Europe in the late 1600's and the early 1700's.

The Green Brook area and particularly Washington Rock played a major role in the Revolutionary War. From the 'Rock", Gen. Washington was able to watch the movement of the British soldiers during May and June 1777. It is said that Washington spent many hours at the site, often alone and deep in thought, and probably saved many lives because of this strategic location.

Today Green Brook is mostly residential community consisting of approximately 4.6 square miles, and boasts of the beautiful Washington Rock Park which was commissioned on March 27, 1913 and today is 34 acres in size.
