Glen Ridge traces its beginnings back to 1666 when 64 Connecticut families bought a parcel of land from the Lenni-Lenape Indians and named it New Ark to represent a community free from religious persecution. Originally, Glen Ridge was a section of this parcel devoted mostly to farming with a small industrial tract along Toney's Brook. By 1872, Glen Ridge had transformed into the primarily suburban community it is today. Glen Ridge officially seceded as an individual community in 1895.
