The town of Ringoes takes its name from John Ringo, who built a tavern there in 1720. Today, the home of the Black River & Western Railroad, complete with its yards and a museum, are located in Ringoes. In this township, you may also see the Landis house, possibly the oldest structure in Hunterdon County. Needing time to recuperate from an illness contracted at Valley Forge, Lafayette spent time at this house. The original home of the Amwell Academy, built in 1911, is an inn across the street from the Landis house.
