Califon's original town name was California, named in honor of a native son who returned back from the gold fields in 1949. Legend has it that the longer name wouldn't fit on the railroad station sign, so the residents settled for Califon. The area was at one time a major producer of peaches and the local peach basket factory still operates today on its original site. Tours are available by appointment. Other points of interest include a museum and an annual fish-a-thon held annually by the town.
