The area now known as Branchburg Township was originally inhabited by the Raritan Indians. By 1686 the land had been sold to proprietors who later sold it to Dutch and English settlers. The area was called East Jersey and encompassed parts of Essex and Middlesex Counties as well.
Today, Branchburg is a semi-rural area of approximately 20.2 square miles located some thirty five miles southwest of Newark. There is a touch of small village flavor in the hamlets of North Branch and Neshanic Station.
